Writers/Artists Residency

What you get

A fully furnished private cottage on an 18th century estate with 220 acres of pasture, gardens, farmyard and woodland, yet close enough to modern facilities. The cottages are self-catered with log burning stoves, oil heating, optional wireless internet and TV/DVD. Tucked away on the estate you will have all the private time you need to focus on your work, and when looking for that social break there are always approachable people about to talk to. Unfortunately our cottages have stairs and so may not be suitable for people with particular disabilities.

Why this way?

Many artist/writers retreats accommodate short stays at varying levels of cost that end up being no cheaper than a regular holiday let. Our intention is to provide writers/artists with a block of space to work at their own tempo. Instead of workshops and groups, we focus on the solitary aspect of making progress on a work and leaving social needs at the discrepancy of the individual. Whilst some retreats include meals, we feel that each resident has their own schedule, we provide some basic ingredients to cook easy and fresh nutritious meals; as cooking can be a cathartic sabbatical from the cognitive toil of the mind. However, those who rather a prepared meal can book in for breakfast, lunch or dinner according to our regular set meal prices. There are also a plethora of places to eat in our local village.

Our Orchard Cottage and Stable Flat are two small cottages reserved for writers/painters/musician. These two cottages are available at a rate of £560pcm per resident.

If you need to leave early your excess amount is carried forward and deducted from your next visit, or you may transfer it as a discount voucher to a friend. If your fellow guests leave early there is no refund or transferring of the paid amount for the month.

How it works

Residencies can be booked up to six months, depending on cottage availability. Electricity and heating is not included in the monthly cost and is invoiced at the end of the stay. This allows for residents to adjust their stay according to their lifestyle and budget. Whilst meals are not provided, residents are given a selection of our locally grown vegetables provided at the cottage door at the beginning of each week. Tea, and locally roasted coffee is also included.
